Half Moon presents:

Henry Grace

Half Moon - Putney, London

£10 Adv / £12 Door
Entry Requirements: 18+ after 7pm

Alive in America is the debut album from British singer-songwriter Henry Grace.

Born and raised in London, Grace started writing songs when he was 12 years old. Inspired by artists like Cat Stevens and Eva Cassidy, songwriting quickly became an outlet for him. He suffered from depression growing up and eventually made his way to America at the age of 21 in search of a new life. It was there that he started to pursue music.

Living in California, he shook off his demons and started working as a musician while studying literature at college. Earning his first radio plays after self-releasing two early EPs, he began building a following on the west coast, selling out venues like the Hotel Cafe. As his time in the States continued, he made the transition from British folk singer to Americana songwriter and started drawing comparisons to the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Bon Iver. On a trip to Saginaw, Michigan, to visit Mule luthier Matt Eich, he was handed a new resonator guitar to help with the album. Its gritty, worn-in sound became the bedrock of the songs he would spend the next few months writing.

The album’s 10 tracks were recorded live over just 5 days at Rockfield Studios in February 2021. Engineered by Josh Tyrell (Van Morrison) and mixed by Oliver McKiernan (Echobelly), Alive in America is the sound of one man/voice cutting through the void. It is rough around the edges, almost harsh at times, like the landscape he is drawing from, and is littered with cinematic imagery resonant of the Coen brothers. Self-produced and autobiographical, Grace references battling depression in “Junkyard Junkie” and time spent in Arizona in “Sierra Skyline” whilst the post-apocalyptic single “Midnight Sunset” was inspired by the 2016 Oakland riots he witnessed as a student. Due for release on January 14th 2022, Alive in America is a stark and vivid depiction of the country Grace called home and ultimately credits with saving his life.
